Herbert Handt. “La fanciulla del West: a letter from Lucca"

Herbert Handt, a graduate of The Juilliard School, worked for four years under the direction of Arturo Toscanini at NBC before completing his studies in Europe at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, at the Akademie für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna and at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome. Since 1948, he has been active as tenor, conductor, musicologist and cultural entrepreneur throughout Europe, predominantly in Italy, where he has appeared in major theaters and concert halls. Mr. Handt has also appeared in leading roles at the Chicago Lyric Opera and the San Francisco Opera, and was introduced into the operatic world through his apprenticeship at the Metropolitan Opera. His credits include first modern performances of many early-music works, critical and practical editions, recordings of many works by Monteverdi, Haydn, Mozart and Rossini, as well as numerous world-première performances in collaboration with major contemporary composers. Handt collaborated for many years with the Pesaro Rossini Foundation and more recently has conducted his own editions of numerous Rossini's works for the Rossini Festival in Bad Wildbad, Germany.
